Trauma and PTSD

When traumatised we have reactions which manifest on different levels. There is a delicate balance between the different worlds within worlds in your life: emotional, mental, physical and spiritual. These can be deeply affected by trauma. These vary in intensity and in how long they take to subside. This in turn depends on factors such as the severity of the event, the level of support we have, our memory of possible previous traumatic experiences, etc. Some recover fairly quickly, but others may take long time to recover during which they develop conditions such as depression, post traumatic stress disorder, anxiety disorder etc.

At Ahead Counselling Psychology you will have specialised treatment of the disorder in a holistic treatment manner, in order to work to restore balance back into your life.

Signs and Symptoms of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder can be grouped into three areas:

  1. Re-experiencing symptoms e.g. flashbacks, bad dreams, frightening thoughts.

  2. Avoidance symptoms e.g. avoiding places, events or objects which remind you of the experience, feeling emotionally numb, guilt, loss of interest in things you used to enjoy,or struggling to remember important parts of the event

  3. Hyperarousal symptoms e.g. Being easily startled, feeling tense or "on edge", having trouble with falling or staying asleep, angry outbursts.

Research indicates that stress disorders are effectively treated with psychotherapy and in some cases medication.
